Arabic isn’t a single language
Ask for an “Arabic interpreter” and you’ve narrowed your target to a language used by about 400 million people across more than 20 countries.
The reality is that spoken Arabic varieties can differ from one another almost as much as European languages like French, Spanish, and Italian.
Modern Standard Arabic is the language of news broadcasts, official documents, contracts and formal speeches. It is often the right choice for translating documents as it is understood across the Arab world.
But it is also almost nobody’s spoken language. People do not use it to describe a medical issue, ask for support from their bank, or describe an issue with their housing.
Instead, everyday communication relies on regional spoken varieties: Egyptian, Levantine, Iraqi, Gulf, Sudanese, Moroccan and more
The differences between these dialects are real. A Moroccan speaker and an Iraqi speaker, each using their own native form, may catch only fragments of what the other says.
